The Origin
The story of UV begins in La Rad, a site in San Vicente de la Sonsierra where Fernando acquired his first vineyards in 2007. From the very beginning, it revealed itself as a distinct place: year after year, its Tempranillo grapes gave rise to a wine that was more vibrant, long, and delicate than the rest. In contrast to more structured or powerful wines, the one from La Rad stood out for its finesse.
For a decade, the winery vinified the grapes from this plot separately —as it also did with others— eventually blending the wine into the Reserva. Ten years of observation and learning made it possible to understand the unique personality of this place and of this wine.
The Vineyard
La Rad lies at a high altitude, very close to the Sierra de Cantabria, which provides naturally cooler conditions. This location, combined with the soil composition, gives the vineyard —planted in 1973— a distinctive character, defined by depth, finesse, and subtlety. The resulting wines are less exuberant than those from other Tempranillo vineyards in the area.
Viticulture in La Rad requires precise work, which is now carried out organically with a view toward future certification. We have conducted a detailed soil study that has helped us better understand how it was formed and how our vineyard develops there. Every task is adapted to the vine’s cycle, with the premise of intervening as little as possible. “La Rad has a natural balance that can only be preserved by observing a lot and acting very little,” notes Jesús Mendoza, winemaker at Remírez de Ganuza.

The Winemaking
In 2017, the decision was made to bottle a small number of wines from La Rad for the first time. The result confirmed what we had suspected: a wine of singular finesse and delicacy for the character of the vintage.
To accompany that character, ageing in oak was chosen not to add structure, but to provide greater complexity and harmony.
The Knowledge of a Vineyard
Working year after year with the same plot —interpreting it, adapting to its rhythms, observing its responses— has made it possible to understand it more deeply. Each La Rad harvest is different, but all share a distinctive and recognizable character, a faithful reflection of the place.
UV, the first 100% Tempranillo wine from Remírez de Ganuza, is the result of that accumulated understanding. The 1,642 bottles of the 2022 vintage represent the precise voice of a vineyard that, after years of patience and observation, speaks with authenticity, freshness, and elegance.
